LOVING FACT FAMILIES

This year our parish has adopted the NY Engage math series, and even though our children are learning math in a different way- there are still some things that I know will help them along the way.  One thing is practicing fact families. So, I created a product that gives my kiddos some hands-on practice manipulating the numbers, and hopefully realizing that only certain numbers can be in the "house".  When we do fact families as a group, we always scream if someone (or me) puts a number in the fact family that should not be there. We scream, "STRANGER IN THE HOUSE".  I do it sometimes just because they love screaming in the classroom!

This freebie is used during center time.  The cards are to be printed with the answers on the back for self-checking capabilities.  Once your student places all the numbers in the correct place, they can turn the card over and check their work.  There are two house mats,  so two students can  put the task card in the center of the work mats and they can race to see who can build the two addition sentences and two subtraction sentences first.

This freebie will be available on February 1st in an Ebook called "Lessons From the Heart".

To give you a sample of another teacher's product in our EBook Lessons from the Heart, Selma Dawani is offering a precious 1st grade Valentine's Day Classify and Categorize product.  This product gives students choice for categorizing their own ideas (teacher gives topic in a heart activity - SUPER CUTE),  as well as the topics below.  There are also several pages where students color the items that go together!  This packet is a great tool for differentiation.  Check it out in the link above.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME BASEBALL?

When introducing our weekly words, we play a little baseball game.
All students have a sheet in front of them with the Elkonin boxes
for each word.  I stand in the front of the classroom (probably looking
silly to anyone passing by our window), and I throw out the
word like a baseball.  Students can either catch it or hit it.  Once
I shout out the word, then they say it as they catch/hit it.
Next I ask the students how many sounds they hear.  Then
I click on the baseball that the pitcher is holding, and the boxes appear
on our flipchart.  Next I have a student help me with
each sound.  Then they write it on their Elkonin sheet.
These words go home in their binder for the week.
The students love playing the game and it gives us time
to get those wiggles out so we can focus on our words.

I have these products as a bundle or in two week increments.  Each
week has over 50 pages of materials.
I have over 20 pages of print and go activities,
center activities, home learning activities, word wall words,
flash card words, assessments,  a powerpoint for each week, and the
flipchart for each week shown above.

This is the only thing we use for our high frequency words and there is always
more than enough to get through the week!

1/12/14 Center Time

2 hours without my direct instruction has never been more difficult than this year.  I don't know if it is because I've been out of the 1st grade classroom for four years and I'm rusty, or if the kids need more engaging centers than what kept them interested four years ago.  So, I revamped once again...

I added Spot that Word to our free center, which truly helped.  Once I noticed that they liked fast, competitive games, I decided to add a few more to our list.

For this game, I just typed, printed, laminated,
cut, and made an envelope with our
weekly sentences.  The words go
into the envelope (I have two sets).
Then students race to see which group can
build all the sentences the fastest.
Only problem - it can get sort of
loud because they get so excited and
nervous.  It's cute!  These cut-up words are in
my Words to Know packets.  I have weeks 1-32.
To see if this is something you would like, I
have week 19 as a FREEBIE in my TPT store.

This is a number bond flashcard set where one
student is the teacher and the other two
students race to see who can say
the answer first.  This is great for
number bond practice.

The next two pictures show a game I created to help with
tally marks, ten and ones, and numerals.  The students
play battle with these cards.  At first, it was a little
hard because I put 0 - 99 in the deck.  So, you can
imagine what it's like with 99 tally marks!  Jeeze - what
was I thinking?!?  But, eventually they got it, and
now it's a popular game during centers.  I made these, but
I have not put them in my stores - I think I'll do these as a
Fan Freebie once I figure out how to do that. :0

It's a "Beary" Good Giveaway BLOG HOP and a Collaboration Giveaway

SCROLL ALL THE WAY DOWN FOR FOUR DIFFERENT GIVEAWAYS!

I am so excited to be participating in my first GIVEAWAY with 12 other TPT creators, so I thought I'd give away my favorite product.   My SPOT THAT WORD games are a favorite in my classroom, and I just know once you download and print, your kiddos will feel the same way. I will give away a pack of three different games (1st or 2nd grade depending on your preference).

Spot that Word is a game that helps students with high frequency words. There are 8 different words on each card, 55 cards, and 57 different sight words.  Each student has a stack of cards with one card in the middle.  The object of the game is to say the matching word that is on your card and the card in the middle the fastest.  THE COOL THING... there is only one matching word per card, and it is your job to find it.

My students absolutely love this game, and will pick going to this free center over IPads and Computers.  To see photos, Click Here.  Below is an example.

If you would like to have a chance to win 3 SPOT THAT WORD games, fill out the giveaway below.  If you're new to raffles on blogs, you can do all of them, a few of them, or just one.  Your choice!   Once you're done with the givaway form, please click on the picture below it to continue our BLOG HOP.  There are more great things to be had!
